“I agree,” Doug said from the back seat after Rowan had expressed his and Waylon’s concerns. “But like it or not, Neil is Deacon at the moment. It will make the whole Community look bad.”

“So we tell the public the truth: that Neil overtook Old Magic before he went after the rest of us,” Rowan said. “If we go public first, we’ll have him on the defensive from the start.”

“Who’s this we you keep referring to?” Doug asked.

“New Magic is gone,” Rowan said. “I’m a nobody now.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Waylon spoke up. He had let them do most of the talking, concentrating on his driving instead. “Every time I turn around, someone is asking me what the Flame Lord is doing about all this.”

“Apparently, they haven’t seen this morning’s paper,” Rowan said.

“Funny thing is, when I mention that, they tell me they have.”

“That makes no sense.”

Waylon shrugged. “Whether you realize it or not, you’ve become more than a figurehead for a magical power. I think it’s because the world has seen your face. And if they watched that news segment last night—and I hear the video has gone viral—they’ve seen how you address a challenge even when you’re only human.”

“Anyone with the ability would have done the same.”

“Sadly, you’re wrong. Few people would stop to help another in need these days. Hell, I’ve seen movie reviews that complained about a character being too noble. I guess if he’s not a self-centered asshole, he’s not human enough.” Waylon shook his head.

“And yet, when they see it in action, they want to follow that person.” Doug leaned forward and patted Rowan’s shoulder. “I think the we is you.”

“Why not you?” Rowan asked. “You were right there with me.”

“I’m a necromancer. We’ve always been the bad guys.”

Rowan turned to look at him, and Doug gave him a cheek-dimpling smile that reminded him of Ian.

Rowan faced forward and pulled out his phone. “I’ll ask Natalie to meet me at the Offices. I can study that video surveillance while I wait.”

Waylon frowned.

“Is that a problem?”

“Not at all. I’ll have it sent to you.” Waylon’s easy acquiescence didn’t explain his expression, but Rowan didn’t question him about it.
